Take PJD link cue, stop Penang reclamation, Aliran tells state govt

Aliran said cancelling the Penang South Islands (PSI) reclamation project would be in line with the state government’s green agenda.

PETALING JAYA: The Penang government should follow Selangor’s example of cancelling a mega infrastructure project and do the same with the state’s planned south islands reclamation project, a civil society group said.

“Aliran is happy with the Selangor government’s decision to scrap the Petaling Jaya Dispersal Link (PJD Link) highway project and hopes Penang will follow in cancelling the Penang South Islands (PSI) reclamation project.

“Although the decision to cancel the project may have been made due to the current political situation to win votes, we are still relieved by the decision,” Aliran’s executive committee said in a statement today.

The committee said stopping the PSI would guarantee the food security of the people and the livelihood of fishermen in the northern region.

“Cancelling PSI is also more in line with the spirit of the state government’s ‘Penang Green Agenda’.

“We also urge the Penang government to cancel the highway project from Teluk Bahang to Tanjung Bungah along the sensitive landslide-prone hillsides of northern Penang,” it said.

The group also urged the incoming Penang government to hire experts to come up with a statewide sustainable mobility master plan that prioritises people over cars.

The PSI is a new urban development off the coast of Penang Island, which includes homes, leisure, and work sites.

On Monday, Selangor caretaker menteri besar Amirudin Shari said the PJD Link had been scrapped as the impact assessment reports submitted by the developer were not satisfactory.

He said the developer did not meet certain conditions set by the state government, particularly its social impact assessment report (SIA). - FMT
