Zahid should quit as president for 'sabotaging' Umno, say Noh Omar

Former Umno minister Noh Omar has taken aim at Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and called for him to resign from the post after the party's poor showing in the six state polls held over the weekend.

Former six-term MP Noh rebutted Zahid's accusation that he had sabotaged the party, saying that Zahid himself did the damage.

“I want to congratulate the Umno president for sabotaging his own party. Why didn’t he help his party candidate campaign in Sungai Burong last Friday? Instead, he went to Permatang, where a PKR candidate was contesting.

“So, who is the one that sabotaged the party? Why would a party president put more importance on another party but not his own?” said Noh in his longtime stronghold of Tanjong Karang, according to a report by The Star.

Noh was sacked from Umno in January over allegations that he had sabotaged the party and went on to campaign for PN, vowing to make his home base a stronghold for the opposition alliance.

While he has not joined any party, his daughter Nurul Syazwani quit Umno after her father's sacking.

She contested the state polls under Bersatu, defeating PKR's Mohd Yahya Mat Sahri in Permatang.

Umno’s defeat in northern Selangor seats was Zahid’s own doing, said Noh, who accused the latter of running the party as a personal fiefdom.

“The state election results from the polling streams show that many young voters in the Malay belt have chosen PN over BN. The majority vote in Sungai Burong was over 6,000, which has never happened before,” he added.

PAS' Dr Mohd Zamri Mohd Zainuldin won Sungai Burong by bagging 15,447 votes against Umno’s Mohamad Khir Ramli who got 8,605 votes. - Mkini
