Hard to tell who'll win Pelangai polls - Adnan Yaakob

PELANGAI BY-ELECTION | Former Pahang menteri besar Adnan Yaakob said it is hard to predict whether tomorrow's Pelangai by-election will favour BN, or Perikatan Nasional.

According to Adnan, who served eight terms as the Pelangai assemblyperson, his observation is based on his campaigning on the ground for BN’s candidate for the polls, Amizar Abu Adam.

"I have gone down to campaign the last three days, and God willing, tomorrow (today), I will campaign as well.

"A lot of people I meet say the chances of them voting are 50-50 (for BN and PN). They are still uncertain about who to support. Thus, I'm unable to predict who will emerge victorious on polling day," Berita Harian quoted Adnan saying when met on the campaign trail at Kampung Lembah Jaya in Bentong yesterday.

According to Adnan, both BN and PN are canvassing for support by playing up federal issues instead of talking about local problems.

Adnan also noted that he and the BN campaign machinery are yet to cover the whole voter base in Pelangai with just a day remaining for polling day.

"We have yet to cover every house (in the constituency). I also notice that the ceramah are all focused on 'big' issues that hardly matter to the laymen,” he said.

Adnan also believes that the electoral outcome tomorrow will send a message to whichever party loses the election.

"If Umno loses, it must work harder to expand its influence. The same goes for PN.

"What matters is choosing a leader to represent the people. The state government will still be led by (Menteri Besar) Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, and God-willing, BN will regain the (Pelangai) seat," he said.

BN won 16 state seats in Pahang during the 15th general election, while PN won 17. However, BN managed to form the state government after it entered a cooperation with Pakatan Harapan which had eight seats in the state legislative assembly.

The Pelangai seat was won by BN’s Johari Harun, who died in a plane crash on Aug 17, thus triggering the by-election. - Mkini
