Malaysian climber dies at Mera Peak in Nepal

PUTRAJAYA: A staff member of Petronas Chemicals, Hazlami Ahmad Nizam, 33, died while climbing Mera Peak in Nepal today.

When contacted, the Malaysian Diplomatic Mission Office in Nepal said it received news regarding the death of a Malaysian while climbing the 6,476 m peak but it has not received the full report.

A spokesperson said it received a call on the matter at 11am local time today and would share more information on the incident once it received the full report.

A friend of the deceased, who did not want to the identified, said the process is ongoing to procure a helicopter to bring down the body, which is expected to be carried out tomorrow.

He said he was informed by the deceased's family members after he was contacted by the party that managed the climb.

He said he knew the deceased, who worked in Gambang, Kuantan, through climbing activities and his family asked him to help with the process to bring the body home.

"I have called the Malaysian mission in Nepal and several family members will arrive in Nepal tomorrow to handle the process to bring the body home," he said when contacted.

Mera Peak is one of 18 peaks in the Himalayas that is popular with climbers. - NST
