PETALING JAYA: Many of the complaints about sexual harassment received by welfare authorities have come from men.
Deputy women, family and community development minister Aiman Athirah Sabu said 351 people, or 28.9% of those who filed reports with the Social Support Centre of Yayasan Kebajikan Negara, were male.
She said the centre received reports from 1,213 people during the 12 series of the ministry’s anti-sexual harassment roadshow launched last May, Bernama reported.
“Men should not take this issue lightly because they are also not immune to sexual harassment,” Aiman said when officiating the 13th series of the roadshow in Kangar today.
On May 29, deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi launched the national-level anti-sexual harassment roadshow in Putrajaya. It aims to raise awareness of sexual harassment in society.
Aiman said sexual harassment at the workplace and at home were among the reports recorded.
She said according to police, 477 cases of sexual harassment were reported in 2022, compared to 506 in 2021. The majority of the victims were women.
“However, we must admit that many incidences of sexual harassment are still not reported to the authorities. The actual number may be higher than what is reported,” she said.
Aiman said according to a report from Unicef Malaysia in 2021, at least 4% of children aged 12 to 17, were subjected to clear instances of online sexual exploitation and abuse. - FMT
