New pricing scheme kicks in, Unifi reduces broadband rates

Telekom Malaysia (TM) has become the first fibre broadband provider to reduce prices following the latest Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing (MSAP).

The MSAP took effect on March 1, however, service providers had six months to cut rates.

Under the new pricing scheme, TM's cheapest offering will be the Unifi 100Mbps service which will cost RM99 per month, down from RM129 per month.

Unifi 300Mbps will cost RM139 per month, down from RM149 while Unifi 500Mbps will cost RM159 per month, down from RM209.

The company's 1Gbps and 2Gbps offerings remain unchanged at RM289 per month and RM319 per month respectively.

Additionally, TM will offer the Unifi 100Mbps package for RM89 per month for a limited time.

"Selected" Unifi customers will also enjoy a free speed upgrade, such as those currently on the Unifi 30Mbps package will be phased out.

The MSAP was introduced in 2018 under the Dr Mahathir Mohamad administration, reducing the wholesale prices of fibre broadband. Service providers reacted almost immediately by reducing retail prices.

This time around, the process took longer. In August, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said service providers were required to slash prices by September - six months after the new MSAP.

When September eventually came, Fahmi said negotiations with service providers were still ongoing. - Mkini
