PM orders another extension on Kg Sungai Baru eviction

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has ordered a postponement of an eviction notice issued to residents of Kampung Sungai Baru, Kuala Lumpur, which was initially supposed to take effect today.

The matter was confirmed to Malaysiakini by Anwar's political secretary Azman Abidin.

"I can confirm that the PM has given instructions to postpone the eviction of Kampung Sungai Baru (residents), which was supposed to be carried out today.

"The Prime Minister's Office also instructed that residents are (now) given until Oct 31," said Azman.

"This is an extension to a previous extension given (from today) until Oct 19 for them to move out.

"We hope the residents' action committee will continue their negotiations in the given time. They are also welcome to offer alternative suggestions," he added.

Hoping for a better solution

Earlier, a committee member, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed to have been approached by a group of government agency representatives, together with the project's developer and police personnel.

"They came to once again stick 'red notices' (eviction) on our homes. There were also houses seized.

"We hoped for a better solution. But we're disappointed with the government's treatment and management of a problem faced by the people," said the committee member.

On Dec 19 last year, the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory’s Department of Lands and Minerals director-general issued an eviction notice to its occupants who are 99-year leaseholders.

This was despite the leases still having 57 years remaining.

Anwar in response to the residents had ordered for their initial evictions, first scheduled on Jan 19, to be postponed.

The Kampung Sungai Baru land acquisition issue involves 67 terrace house units and 14 apartment blocks known as Sungai Baru

The apartments were part of a land acquisition process starting in 2016.

Residents, especially those of terrace houses, do not agree with the compensation rate of RM400 per sq ft set by the department.

To date, 37 terrace house owners have rejected the compensation offer, while 27 others have agreed. - Mkini
