Terengganu decides not to enter women gymnastics in Sukma

The Terengganu state government has decided not to enter the women’s gymnastics event in the Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2024 due to the issue of non-syariah compliance outfits.

Terengganu Youth, Sports and NGO chairperson Hishamuddin Abdul Karim said the sport requires the athletes to wear tight clothes that reveal the shape of the body.

“For now, we will not continue (with gymnastics). We will not compromise on this matter and this stance should be respected,” he said as reported by Harakah Daily today.

In March 2020, the Terengganu state government launched an Entertainment, Cultural Performances, Tourism and Sports guideline.

Among the guidelines set were that Muslim athletes should wear outfits that are courteous, syariah-compliant and suitable for the sport.

Non-Muslim athletes were recommended to dress courteously in clothes that are not too tight, short or skimpy.

Hishamuddin said they are using the polite approach as they acknowledge that it is difficult to fully enforce syariah-compliant outfits among athletes due to challenges with international standards.

“We are bringing a syariah-friendly approach as a step towards change and the process should lean more on educating and raising awareness among all athletes.

“We are not taking a direct approach towards enforcement. Now it is more about the process of educating, giving enough time for this approach we are trying out,” he said. - Mkini
