PETALING JAYA: A 2020 directive banning products put on display from containing non-Islamic festive greetings is no longer in effect, says the Islamic development department (Jakim).
Jakim reiterated that there is nothing obstructing business premises with halal certification from placing festive greetings on their products, such as cake orders.
“Jakim will conduct a review and reevaluation on any matters related to the halal certification procedure manual.
“Jakim’s statement issued in 2020 is invalidated with this explanation,” said the department in a statement today
According to the Jakim statement issued in December 2020, premises with halal certification are allowed to place festive greetings on products only if the goods were not meant to be put on display.
Products with the halal logo meant for display may also not bear such greetings, the statement added.
The issue made headlines again last week after a local bakery chain said it will not allow Christmas greetings on its cakes in abiding by a rule set by Jakim, otherwise it risked losing its halal certification.
An image of the internal memo from Berry’s to employees, citing the old rules by Jakim, had been widely shared on social media, with criticisms of discrimination directed against the chain.
Berry’s Cake House has since removed its notice telling staff not to accept requests for Christmas greetings on cakes, following the government’s announcement that it does not prohibit halal-certified bakeries from doing so. - FMT
