KUALA KRAI: About 500 residents from the villages of Pasir Jering, Dusun Ban, Dusun Bunut and Batu Pagar near Chenulang have been cut off after a 25m bridge collapsed following the recent floods.
A villager from Kampung Pasir Jering, Mahdam Abdullah, 30, said he learnt of the incident at 1pm today when the floodwaters started to recede.
“Although there was a major flood in 2014, this bridge did not collapse, and this is the first time this has happened in our village.
“It will now be difficult for us villagers to carry out daily activities such as buying kitchen essentials and others,” he told reporters, and expressed hope that the authorities would build a new bridge immediately.
The commander of the army’s 8th Brigade, Azudin Hassan, said two Malaysian armed forces boats and one civil defence force boat had been put on standby in case of emergencies.
He said the unit was awaiting further instructions from the disaster control centre.
“Nearly 55 personnel have been deployed to ensure the safety of residents,” he told reporters after inspecting the site. - FMT
