PETALING JAYA: Members of the Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) are providing financial assistance to those affected by the floods due to heavy downpours this monsoon season.
In a statement, ABM said that as with previous years, it had in place specific, accessible and compassionate flood relief assistance for customers who have been impacted by the floods.
The assistance offered is based on customised programmes by individual banks and may include deferment of repayment of loans or financing, waiver of fees and charges to replace lost and damaged bank documents, bank cards, and more.
In addition, it said affected micro, small and medium-sized enterprises can apply for assistance through its disaster relief facility.
“Customers in flood-affected areas are advised to refer to announcements by their respective banks for guidance in applying for flood relief assistance,” it said.
ABM also said announcements on flood relief assistance will be posted on the banks’ official channels including at branches, websites, online banking platforms, and social media accounts. Affected customers are advised to contact their banks directly through official channels.
ABM has 26 members comprising commercial banks, including Affin Bank Bhd, Hong Leong Bank Bhd, and Malayan Banking Bhd.
The northeast monsoon season, which began earlier last month, has hit multiple states including Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Terengganu, Kelantan and Pahang.
It has also affected Johor and Sabah, with the number of evacuees nationwide rising to 28,310 people today. According to the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), Kelantan has the highest number of evacuees at 17,466.
Last week, Nadma ordered that state and district disaster management committees be activated following an alert-level continuous rain warning for several areas issued by the meteorological department. - FMT
