Bumiputera congress: Explain yourself, Puad tells Ti

Umno supreme council member Puad Zarkashi has slammed former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker for the latter’s alleged inflammatory statement about the Bumiputera Economic Congress.

Taking to Facebook, Puad (above) said Ti must explain the statement, claiming it has offended the Malay community’s feelings.

“Ti is merely pretending to show courage now as he feels that he is at the end of his political journey and no longer holds any party position.

“Would he have the courage to make such a statement if he was still the deputy minister?

“That’s the tone of a disappointed person as Ti failed to retain his post as MCA vice-president in the previous party election,” Puad said.

During a Senate sitting on Dec 4, Ti called on the coalition government to discontinue the Bumiputera Economic Congress scheduled to take place next month.

Instead, the former MCA leader urged the government to organise an economic congress that benefits all Malaysians.

He said the time has come for the Bumiputera Economic Congress to no longer be steered for political gains or used as a platform by opportunists who take advantage of it.

Ti explained that it was not a move to deny the rights of the Malays but claimed that the series of economic congresses had failed to achieve the desired goals.

In response, Puad said three congresses have been held since 1965.

“Are the three congresses held in the past 58 years considered to be useless?

“Does he (Ti) also deny other parties including Chinese NGOs from repeatedly organising congresses, seminars, forums and workshops?

“Ti is insolent for accusing that scholarships, GLCs, civil servants and contracts are monopolised by the Malays. He is disputing the special rights of the Malays.”

Congress delivers results

Puad then detailed the successes achieved due to the congresses.

“In the first congress, there were improvements to the institutions established following the congress. Following the first congress, Mara was established and then, it was ITM (Institut Teknologi Mara) which later became UiTM (Universiti Teknologi Mara).

“For the second one, we brainstormed what other new Malay institutions that could be created to strengthen the Malay agenda.

“And in the third congress, there was a proposal for wakaf to be managed professionally to empower the bumiputera community’s economy, resulting in the creation of Wakaf Annur KPJ. It was successful,” he said.

Puad also refused to pass up on the opportunity to lampoon MCA, saying it’s the party’s “loss” for sidelining Ti in its internal party election in September.

“What is his intention in questioning Malays’ rights to prosper? Ti just wants to be seen as a relevant Chinese leader,” Puad claimed. - Mkini
