Wrong to say Gaza ceasefire would plant seeds for next war - Wisma Putra

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has announced Malaysia's deep regret that the United Nations Security Council failed to adopt a resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza because of a single veto by the United States.

In a statement today, it said the fact that the draft resolution had received significant support from 102 countries, including Malaysia, was a testament to the international community’s desire to see an immediate end to the assault on Gaza.

According to the Palestine News Agency (Wafa), the latest death toll has soared to 17,674 since hostilities began on Oct 7, with over 49,300 individuals wounded, while at least 1,147 people have been killed in Israel during the same period.

"Malaysia rejects the assertion that an immediate ceasefire would ‘only plant the seeds for the next war’.

"It is the continued aggression by Israel against the innocents in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territory at large that poses a real and ongoing threat to a durable peace and the ultimate two-state solution.

"The current humanitarian situation in Gaza is simply untenable," said the ministry.

It added that the government is deeply saddened by the decision to ignore the clamour and appeal from the international community.

"Despite the UN secretary-general’s grave warnings and the appeal by humanitarian actors, the Council’s continued failure to objectively address the situation is a grave injustice and a total disregard for the human lives in Gaza.

"Malaysia reiterates its call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, the protection of civilians, and the urgent delivery of lifesaving aid to the people in Gaza.

"Malaysia is unyielding in its conviction that the Palestinians deserve their own independent and sovereign state, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital," it added. - Mkini
