Covid-19 cases almost double to 6,800 in one week

Health director-general Dr Radzi Abu Hassan says healthcare facilities are not strained, despite the sharp rise in cases.

PETALING JAYA: The number of reported Covid-19 cases has increased to 6,796 from 3,626 in one week, health director-general Dr Radzi Abu Hassan said.

In his update for the week ending Dec 2, he said the rate of admission for Covid-19 patients, including suspected cases, to healthcare facilities was 3.5 per 100,000 population, while 1.0 per 100,000 population were mildly symptomatic.

He said although there has been a sharp rise in cases, the situation is under control and healthcare facilities are not strained.

“However, considering the increasing number of cases, healthcare personnel are advised to remain vigilant,” he said in a statement.

Radzi said 72.9% of the cases were Omicron variant, 26.2% Delta variant, and the remaining cases Alpha and Beta variants.

“To date, no new variants have been detected in Malaysia, and there is no indication that locally circulating variants are more transmissible or cause more severe illness,” he said.

Last week, Sarawak tourism, creative industry and performing arts minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Sarawakians, especially those in the tourism industry, need not be overly worried about the recent rise in Covid-19 cases.

He said he was confident the health ministry would react decisively if there was a surge in infections. - FMT
