PETALING JAYA: A detainee who escaped the Kepayan lock-up in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on Saturday has been recaptured this morning.

State deputy police commissioner Shahurinain Jais said the police nabbed the detainee, who was hiding in an old hut in a forest near Mimpian Jadi Resort in Tuaran, at around 11.50am.

“The Sabah police would like to thank the public for the information shared with the police, which led to the arrest of the suspect,” he told FMT.

Previously, the police said the 33-year-old detainee, identified as Nazri Hassan, fled by climbing up the grilled door when he was escorted by the lock-up officer to the interrogation room at around 12.30pm on Saturday.

He then ran towards and climbed up the fence. The officer gave chase but the detainee got away by running towards the bushes.

The suspect was remanded from Dec 10 to Dec 18 to facilitate investigations under Section 431A of the Penal Code for committing mischief by cutting electric telegraph cables, wires, lines, posts, instruments or apparatus for signalling.

The police are also probing the officer who was responsible for escorting the prisoner and will decide on the disciplinary action to be taken once the investigation is completed. - FMT
