Former health minister Chua dies at 80

Former health minister Chua Jui Meng passed away today at the age of 80.

He was reportedly hospitalised last week after a heart attack.

Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa confirmed his death.

Chua was the longest-serving health minister in the country, holding the post from 1995 to 2004.

He first started his political career in MCA and rose to the rank of vice-president.

He also made two unsuccessful attempts at becoming MCA president.

Under the BN banner, Chua had won the Bakri parliament seat five times, with his first win in 1986.

In 2009, he quit the party and joined PKR where he served as Johor chief until 2014.

PKR in a message expressing its condolences, credited Chua's leadership for the party capturing the Batu Pahat parliament seat for the first time in 2013.

In that election, Chua himself contested for the Segamat seat but lost to MIC's S Subramaniam. - Mkini
