PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian quarantine and inspection services department (Maqis) in Penang has seized 100,000kg of whey powder valued at more than RM400,000 at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) today.
Penang Maqis director Ikram Abd Talib said they detained five containers of the dairy product from Ireland after an inspection revealed discrepancies in the documents declared.
“The information provided by the importer regarding the processing plant for the goods differed from the details stated on the health certificate and Maqis permit.
“As a result, all the goods, totalling 100,000kg and estimated to be worth over RM400,000, have been detained for further action,” Bernama quoted Ikram as saying in a statement.
Ikram said the case is being investigated under Section 13 of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011, which states that any person who provides false, inaccurate or misleading information in the importation of agricultural, animal, carcass, fish, agricultural products, soil and microorganisms is committing an offence.
He also reminded industry players to always comply with the terms and regulations set by the government or face strict action. This is to ensure the country’s food industry is free from contaminants and diseases and is halal for consumption. - FMT
