Amanah president Mohamad Sabu today said any proposals to revive local government election must result in a “win-win” outcome for all races.
In his winding-up speech at the Amanah National Congress, Mohamad said further in-depth discussions must be done to achieve the desired outcome.
“That (win-win) means all races feel satisfied, all races feel safe,” he told delegates gathered at the Wyndham Acmar Hotel, Klang.
Mohamad said other matters to be taken into consideration include how individuals eventually elected to the positions would carry out their duties.
“If they are elected by the people, they must work for the people, and not their party president.
“Right now to appoint a local councillor, they must ‘lobby’ their party head.
“But if the people choose, they need to win the people’s hearts,” he said.
Last weekend, Federal Territories DAP chairperson Tan Kok Wai’s suggestion to restore local council elections - permanently suspended since 1976 - sparked outcries from not only Perikatan Nasional but also Umno as a party in government.
Critics claimed that local council election would lead to racial instability as Malays would reportedly lose power in such polls. - Mkini
