DAP’s Ng Suee Lim said that he informed the party’s leadership before accepting state honours from Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah earlier today.
Ng, who is the Selangor exco for local government and tourism, refused to delve further into the matter but not before stating that the matter would be left to the party’s leadership.
“There were issues (about receiving honours) before this, but we have entered a new age of globalisation.
“All conditions (such as) conducive developments and becoming (forming) government need to be examined.
“In this context, I had already informed the leadership,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan.
Ng now carries the “Datuk” title and was among the 97 recipients of state honours in conjunction with the 78th birthday of the Selangor ruler.
Just two months ago, two DAP elected representatives from Sabah were issued a stern warning by the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) after being conferred and accepting state datukships.
The duo - Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin and Luyang assemblyperson Phoong Jin Zhe - apologised and said they accepted a reprimand for violating the party’s policy which prohibits members from accepting titles while serving as elected representatives.
DAP’s current policy states that only retired party members are allowed to accept honours from heads of state and federal governments. - Mkini
