Nothing special to win in your own stronghold, says Anwar’s aide

PETALING JAYA: A political secretary to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has played down PAS’s victory in the Kemaman by-election yesterday, dismissing it as “nothing extraordinary”.

Kamil Abdul Munim, the PKR Youth deputy chief, also dismissed PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan’s claim that Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar’s landslide victory was a referendum on the unity government led by Anwar.

He said no one had considered Barisan Nasional’s victory in the Pelangai by-election in October as a referendum on the Anwar government.

“Winning in one’s own stronghold is not extraordinary,” he said in a posting on X. “It would be different if (Perikatan Nasional) won in Subang.”

He expressed hope that Samsuri, who is also Terengganu menteri besar, would inspire his fellow opposition MPs to be more effective since PN’s supporters had placed high hopes on him.

Kamil also took a dig at opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin and PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin over Samsuri’s apparent surge in popularity. “Don’t be disheartened. Work well together (with Samsuri),” he said, cynically.

PAS and Bersatu are partners in PN.

Samsuri defended the Kemaman parliamentary seat for PAS last night, defeating his BN rival Raja Affandi Raja Noor by 37,220 votes, a majority that was 10,000 votes more than PAS obtained in the general election last year.

Samsuri obtained a total of 64,998 votes – some 700 votes less than the 2022 result. Raja Affandi, a retired general and former defence forces chief, garnered 27,778 votes – about 10,500 votes less than what BN obtained in 2022. - FMT
