Selangor MB's aide to be charged over social media post

The press secretary of Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari will be charged in court on Thursday over an alleged X (formerly known as Twitter) posting last year linked to Malacca governor Mohd Ali Rustam.

In an X posting today, Jay Jay Denis confirmed that he would be charged at the Alor Gajah Sessions Court in regard to his post dated Sept 6, 2022.

“After over a year, the police informed me that I would be charged this Thursday at Alor Gajah (Sessions) Court in Malacca in relation to my Twitter post referring to Malacca TYT (governor) Ali Rustam,” he said.

Jay Jay’s (above) current tweet is attached with a posting dated Oct 9 last year about him being escorted from the Klang Valley to Malacca by three officers from the Alor Gajah district police headquarters.

It is not known at present under what specific provision that he would be charged under.

On Oct 9 last year, it was reported that the activist was detained by police over an earlier tweet. He was released a short while later.

In the Sept 6 tweet, Jay Jay claimed to have witnessed a convoy with police outriders and escort vehicles blocking traffic on the Sprint Highway to perform a U-turn.

He alleged that Ali later emerged from one of the cars.

Jay Jay claimed that Ali had gone to have a family dinner at a restaurant in Medan Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, and posted a video of Ali's convoy leaving the vicinity after the meal.

Alor Gajah district police chief Arshad Abu confirmed the activist was held at the Alor Gajah police district's lockup.

Arshad told Malaysiakini then that investigations are being done under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which criminalises statements that cause alarm or may induce someone to commit an offence against the state.

He said that Jay Jay is also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act - which covers misuse of the internet.
