Senior cop arrested over hit-and-run that killed teen

A 17-year-old SPM candidate died in a hit-and-run accident outside his school, SMK Jati in Ipoh, earlier today.

PETALING JAYA: A senior police officer from Kedah has been arrested over a hit-and-run accident in Ipoh that led to the death of a 17-year-old student earlier today.

Ipoh police chief Yahaya Hassan said a remand order will be sought tomorrow to hold the suspect in custody for further investigation.

“We will not protect anyone, including our own officers, if there is compelling evidence,” he said in a statement tonight.

He said the case was being investigated from various angles including murder. However, the case is currently being handled under the Road Transport Act for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Yahya said the schoolboy victim died of injuries to the chest and abdomen caused by the accident, while the 44-year-old policeman was unhurt.

He urged witnesses to come forward and contact the investigating officer, Jong Pit Chiao at 016-8849163.

Earlier this evening, it was reported that the victim, Zaharif Affendi Zamrie, was knocked off his motorcycle while on his way home from his school, SMK Jati, at 12.30pm today.

According to Sinar Harian, the driver was said to have been annoyed with the loud noises from the motorcycle. The report said the car rammed into Zaharif’s motorcycle after a 1km chase, causing him to fall off and be dragged for nearly five metres.

Witnesses said the driver returned to the scene to examine the victim but fled after noticing a crowd, according to the report.

Zaharif, who was wearing his school uniform, is believed to have died at the scene. - FMT
