PUTRAJAYA: The family of Teoh Beng Hock has submitted a protest letter to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), as no individual has been held responsible since his mysterious death in 2009.

Yap Hwa Ng, a representative of the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement, handed the letter to an officer at the PMO today.

Yap said to date, the government had not given a positive response on the probe into Teoh’s death.

“Since the change of government in November last year, we have attempted to reach the prime minister, home minister (Saifuddin Nasution Ismail), and some MPs but to no avail.

“We tried to engage this government because we believe Pakatan Harapan championed this issue 14 years ago, and there should be some development by today.

“We hope Anwar can spare some time to meet the family and think about how to bring justice for Teoh,” he told the media outside the PMO.

Yap compared Teoh’s case to Anwar’s assault by then inspector-general of police Rahim Noor during his detention in 1998, for which the latter was held responsible.

He said Teoh had been interrogated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and died in custody.

“Someone paid the price for Anwar’s torture. In Teoh’s case, no one from MACC was arrested and charged,” he said.

In 2009, Teoh, who was the political aide to then Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, hours after he had gone into the Selangor MACC headquarters for questioning at its office on the 14th floor.

In 2011, the coroner’s court delivered an open verdict. His family subsequently filed an appeal against the findings.

Three years later, the Court of Appeal set aside the open verdict and ruled that Teoh’s death was caused by multiple injuries as a result of unlawful acts by unknown persons. - FMT
