PETALING JAYA: Researchers with two universities are to be roped in to help officials working on stabilising the prices of goods in East Malaysia, according to the minister for domestic trade and cost of living, Armizan Ali.

He said the researchers from Universiti Malaysia Sabah and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak will help to find a comprehensive mechanism for price stability, Bernama reported.

“We can discuss this together to outline the strategy and mechanism of how we mobilise this committee to ease the burden of the people in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan,” he told reporters here today.

He said his ministry is committed to ensuring that the team can be mobilised next year, and is preparing the terms of reference for the special committee.

“I don’t want to be too ambitious in thinking we can solve all the issues immediately. We have to take short-term, medium-term and long-term approaches because it is not a new issue,” he said.

“Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan have been facing the issue of high prices of goods compared to Peninsular Malaysia for a long time; even if we cannot completely standardise prices, we hope to stabilise the price,” he said. - FMT
