IPOH: Veteran singer M Daud Kilau, 85, died at the Teluk Intan Hospital at 4.40pm today.
His grandson, Hasnor Ikram, announced the singer’s death through his Instagram account.
“My grandfather, Daud Kilau, breathed his last just now. Al-Fatihah,” he said.
The singer, better known as “Raja Gelek”, had multiple health issues, including diabetes and a heart condition.
Daud made his mark in the entertainment industry in 1968, when he won the Bintang Radio Singapura contest with the songs “Musalmah Manis” and “Joget Hitam Manis”.
He would go on to become a successful recording artiste, releasing several LPs and EPs in the traditional Malay genres of Langgam, Asli and Dangdut.
In 1985, he was crowned the winner of the Asli category of the popular entertainment event Pesta Dendang Rakyat.
For his contributions to the industry, he was conferred the title Datuk Paduka Mahkota Perak in 1991.
His remains will be buried at the Sungai Balah Baroh Muslim cemetery in Bagan Datuk after Zohor prayers tomorrow. - FMT
