We didn’t back PM for Cabinet posts, Labuan MP tells PAS man

PETALING JAYA: One of five Bersatu MPs who recently declared support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today said they had done so to secure allocations to help their constituents, not in order to seek Cabinet positions.

Labuan MP Suhaili Abdul Rahman, who was subsequently suspended from Bersatu for six years, also dismissed as provocation PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan’s “disappointment” over their omission from the reshuffled Cabinet.

He said he and the other four Bersatu MPs had never made any demands in return for their support, adding that Cabinet appointments were the prime minister’s prerogative although such designations would be a “bonus”.

“I will continue to support the prime minister even without any position, for the sake of political stability and the welfare of the people.

“Even when we declared our support, we supported the prime minister to get allocations for our constituency, (therefore) we need to be consistent,” he told FMT.

Apart from Suhaili, the Bersatu MPs backing the government are Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), and Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang).

Takiyuddin reportedly said he had expected Syed Hussin to be among the new faces in Anwar’s revised Cabinet or line-up of deputy ministers.

Syed Hussin himself described Takiyuddin’s statement as a “positive” development, quipping that it meant the Kota Bharu MP supported his decision to back the government.

“This is a positive statement from him… I appreciate his view,” he said. - FMT
