PETALING JAYA: Kota Kinabalu has been hit by a significant shortage of sugar, leaving local businesses and consumers concerned, says Warisan vice-president Junz Wong.
The Tanjung Aru assemblyman claimed that many restaurant owners had voiced their concerns after struggling to get enough sugar for their daily operations, Daily Express reported.
He described the shortage as dire and sudden, saying the standard 1kg pack of white sugar sold at RM2.85 had become scarce. Wong also said this raised several questions about the underlying causes.
“When available, it’s being sold for as much as RM4.50 at sundry shops. This is more than just a supply issue, it’s about the livelihood of our local businesses.
“The shortage has hit the local economy hard, especially small and medium-sized enterprises that rely heavily on sugar for their products,” he was quoted as saying in a statement.
Wong called for immediate measures to stabilise the supply of sugar in Kota Kinabalu and to protect the interests of local businesses and consumers.
“The need for a quick and efficient solution is paramount as the community relies on these essential supplies. We hope the government will intervene and effectively address this crisis.” - FMT
