PETALING JAYA: A post-mortem has revealed that a female detainee at a police lock-up in Langkawi last week died due to pneumonia.

In a statement, Bukit Aman integrity and standards compliance department (JIPS) director Azri Ahmad said the 34-year-old woman’s death had been classified as “sudden death”.

“The results from the post-mortem and a Covid-19 screening showed that there were no criminal elements detected in her injury and the victim tested negative for the virus. A doctor confirmed that she died due to pneumonia,” he said.

He added that the post-mortem was conducted at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar, Kedah, yesterday.

The woman, who died on Dec 16, was arrested on Dec 12 for possession of drugs and consumption, and was held at the Kuah police station.

On Dec 15, the woman had complained of feeling unwell. She was subsequently taken to the hospital and died the following day.

“Bukit Aman’s death in custody investigation unit will continue their investigation from various angles, before submitting its findings to the coroner,” Azri said. - FMT
