Rafidah recalls Vision 2020’s united Bangsa Malaysia goal

In 1991, then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad unveiled his Vision 2020 blueprint for the nation which aimed to create a united Malaysian nation made up of one Bangsa Malaysia (Malaysian Race), among others.

Rafidah Aziz, who served as a minister in his cabinet for more than two decades, recalled how this vision encompassed the diverse racial and hereditary origins of all Malaysians.

“It is already 2024. Let us all continue to respect our diversities and accept them wholeheartedly. Let us all be united and continue to build a stronger, competitive and well-respected Malaysia.

“(We should) not allow elements of politics to cause fractiousness and divisiveness amongst us,” she added.

Her remarks come on the heels of Mahathir casting aspersions on the loyalty of Indian and Chinese Malaysians.

Without mentioning names, Rafidah noted that certain quarters had aired their views on who are Malaysians.

“Our nation has been independent from the colonialists for 67 years and has been a united Malaysia for over 60 years. And its citizens are Malaysians.

“Perhaps it is time we truly come together in solidarity as united Malaysians, respecting and accepting all diversities amongst us. Those diversities are a given,” she added.

‘We’re all Malaysians’

Rafidah said there is no need for Malaysians to question one another on their loyalty and love for the nation.

“In fact, those who bring shame and disrespect to others, as well as to our nation, certainly do not care for Malaysia’s good Image.

“Doing our best in our various efforts and endeavours makes Malaysia proud, such as in the case of our youths who have been carrying the Malaysian flag high in their various successes and accomplishments, whether in the country or abroad.

“They did it all as Malaysians and some with no government financial support. Still, they remain as Malaysians,” she added.

Mahathir, whose second tenure as prime minister came to an abrupt end after 22 months in the same year he had hoped to realise his grand vision, is no stranger to divisive remarks.

Vision 2020 outlined nine challenges for Malaysia, which also included establishing a mature liberal and tolerant society.

Since his electoral drubbing in the 2022 general election, the former prime minister has aligned with the opposition and has upped the ante on issues concerning race and religion. - Mkini
