Ex-chief justice Raus to be called to the Bar

Former chief justice Md Raus Sharif is to be called to the Malaysian Bar as a lawyer.

In a media announcement today, his long call is set to be before Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh at about 9.30am on Wednesday (Jan 17).

Lawyer Mohd Hafarizam Harun is set to move the call, while former Court of Appeal president Zulkefli Makinuddin is expected to put the ceremonial robe on Raus.

Raus held the chief justice position for around 15 months from April 2017 to July 2018.

He was the Court of Appeal president for over five years from Sept 2011 to April 2017.

In 2017, Raus’ tenure as chief justice was extended after he reached the mandatory retirement age of 66 years.

This led to the Bar Council saying the move was “unconstitutional” and would erode public confidence in the independence of the judiciary.

After obtaining a Bachelor of Law at Universiti Malaya, Raus became a magistrate in 1976.

Later in 1994, he was made a judicial commissioner at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

In 1996, he was appointed as a High Court judge, and 10 years later he was elevated to become a Court of Appeal judge.

In September 2011, he was elevated to become the Court of Appeal president. - Mkini
