GOMBAK: Selangor police have formed two special teams to monitor frontline rank and file officers following a spate of high-profile crimes involving police personnel.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said the teams, which will be part of the crime prevention and community safety department, will be assisted by the integrity and standards compliance (JIPS) unit.

“These two special teams will continuously monitor the frontliners,” he said at a media conference at the Batu Caves temple here today.

He also said officers-in-charge could face disciplinary action should they fail to supervise their men accordingly.

In a drastic measure, Hussein announced that 167 policemen on mobile patrol vehicle duty who have worked in the police force for more than five years will swap places with those from other units.

Last Friday, a policeman in Ampang was charged with raping a 17-year-old student, while he and a colleague were also charged with extorting the victim’s boyfriend.

Hussein revealed that last year, the police had opened investigation papers on 311 officers and personnel. Of the figure, 33 were charged, 14 were suspended, and 21 were sacked. Further action is pending against the rest.

For January this year alone, 11 policemen were charged in court, including one officer.

“Although this number is small compared to the overall police strength of 15,000 officers and personnel, we look at each case seriously,” he said.

Separately, Hussein announced seven road closures from 10pm today in conjunction with the Thaipusam celebration on Jan 25.

The roads are Jalan Bunga Raya heading towards Batu Caves; Jalan Station (Batu Caves bypass); the ramp at the MRR2 roundabout heading towards Batu Caves; Gombak-bound MRR2 highway heading towards Batu Caves; intersection near Jalan SBC8; Jalan Perusahaan heading towards Batu Caves; and the intersection at Sri Batu Caves leading to MRR2. - FMT
