Terengganu water tariffs to go up by 8 to 18 sen

Syarikat Air Terengganu said the additional revenue from the new tariffs will be used to fund water supply infrastructure development projects.

KUALA TERENGGANU: The new water tariffs for domestic and non-domestic active water user accounts in Terengganu will be raised by between 8 and 18 sen per cubic metre (m3) according to usage rate, effective Feb 1.

Syarikat Air Terengganu Sdn Bhd’s (Satu) CEO, Abdul Karim Endut, said the new tariffs included electricity charges of 8 sen, which were previously absorbed into Satu’s operating costs.

He said households using 0-20m3 will see an increase from 42 sen to 58 sen; while for readings of 20-35m3, the new rate is 83 sen compared to 65 sen previously.

“For consumption of more than 35m3, the new rate is RM1.08/m3 compared to RM1 previously.

“Aside from that, the standing charge for domestic users will change from RM4 to RM5.80,” he said at a press conference at the company’s headquarters here today.

Karim said for the bulk domestic category, the standing charge will be RM10.80 a month, and each cubic metre will increase from RM1 to RM1.08.

He said businesses and non-domestic buildings will also be charged RM1.08 for water consumption up to 35m3.

He said the increase in tariffs will provide Satu with an additional RM9.6 million a year.

“Satu plans to use the extra income for water supply infrastructure development projects such as upgrading of water treatment plants (RM11 million), replacement of critical leaky pipes (RM10 million) and a non-revenue water programme (RM16.6 million),” he said.

Satu provides water to more than 1.2 million residents and businesses through more than 342,000 accounts.

Karim also said Terengganu is the only state that does not charge for water at mosques and suraus registered with the state religious affairs department. - FMT
