Fahmi Reza deported from Sabah, 'thanks' CM Office for free ride home

After being deported from Sabah, activist and graphic designer Fahmi Reza has sarcastically thanked the state Chief Minister's Office (Sabah CMO) for “sponsoring” his flight back to the peninsula.

Fahmi, who was earlier remanded by the police over his caricature of Sabah Governor Musa Aman, posted on Facebook that he was sent to the Kota Kinabalu Airport by Immigration officers after spending two days in Penampang police's "hotel".

"The hotel staff and manager's treatment were top-notch. They were friendly, super professional and not shy of smiles.

"They even sent my breakfast to the room - the food was hot and fresh like it had just come from the kitchen.

"And the most epic thing was this package came with a free flight ticket from KKIA to KLIA, everything was sponsored by the Sabah CMO!

"Plus, there was also free shuttle service from the hotel to the airport by Immigration Department officers who are super cool! Thank you so much (Sabah Chief Minister) Hajiji (Noor) and Sabah Number 1 Corruptor!," Fahmi posted last night.

According to Rajsurian Pillai, who is his lawyer in the peninsula, Fahmi was deported on the evening of Dec 31 (Tuesday) after he was released from police remand.

However, it has yet to be ascertained if the state has imposed any ban on the activist from re-entering Sabah in the future. Malaysiakini has reached out to the Sabah CMO on this matter.

‘Five-star treatment’

In Fahmi's Facebook post, he also sarcastically thanked the authorities for a "five-star" treatment during his two-day and one-night stay at the police’s "Hotel Penampang", which the artist claimed was comparably better than his experience at the Dang Wangi police station’s facilities.

"I have just checked out from Hotel Penampang! My holiday in Sabah this time was superb as I got a two-day and one-night free stay at a super comfy ‘TYT suite’!

"The room was 2.5m by 3m in size, and is also equipped with a toilet that has a door. (FYI, the toilet at ‘Hotel Dang Wangi’ has no door whatsoever lol).

"The room is also super clean, with a cosy floor, and better yet, it comes with a purple pyjama that feels very comfortable," he posted.

On Monday, Fahmi was taken into police custody after going into the district police headquarters to give his statement over his recent caricature.

The caricature featured Musa with his ceremonial headgear as Sabah governor, with a RM100 note in his mouth.

Police later acquired a one-day remand order against Fahmi to facilitate investigations under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for alleged abuse of network facilities, and Section 504 of the Penal Code for alleged intentional insult to provoke a breach of peace.

Yesterday, Berita Harian quoted Sabah police chief Jauteh Dikun confirming that Fahmi has been released on police bail and sent to the Sabah airport at about 9.30pm on Tuesday. - Mkini
