
ALOR GAJAH: A tour van driver is suspected of driving under the influence of drugs after his vehicle crashed at Km212 of the North-South Expressway (PLUS) southbound here today.
District police chief Superintendent Ahmad Abubakar said the 55-year-old tested positive for methamphetamine following initial screening.
He said police received a report of the crash at 10.30am.
Preliminary investigations found that the tour van, carrying eight Indian citizens from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka, is believed to have lost control before skidding onto the left road shoulder.
"The driver was not injured. However, screening confirmed he tested positive for methamphetamine," he said in a statement.
Three passengers, including a 52-year-old man and two boys aged 9 and 13, sustained minor injuries and were sent to Melaka Hospital for treatment.
Ahmad said the driver would be brought before the magistrate's court here tomorrow for a remand application to assist investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 44(1A)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of drugs and causing injury.
Upon conviction, the offence carries a jail term of between seven and 10 years, and a fine of RM30,000 to RM50,000.
Police have urged members of the public with information on the incident to come forward to assist investigations. - NST
