PETALING JAYA:
A man wanted by Singapore police entered Malaysia illegally to seek refuge in Johor, but was kidnapped and held for ransom instead by six people last week.

Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director M Kumar said the man, who had been in Malaysia illegally since May, asked an acquaintance for help but was kidnapped instead.

Kumar said the group initially demanded S$80,000 (about RM255,000) in ransom before agreeing to accept S$25,000.

“Part of the ransom, S$5,000, was paid online, while the remaining S$20,000 was to be handed over at a supermarket,” he was quoted by Sinar Harian as saying today.

He said police arrested a 40-year-old suspect at a supermarket in Nusa Bestari, Iskandar Puteri, yesterday and rescued the victim and his girlfriend.

The victim had sustained injuries to both thighs, believed to have been caused by a sharp weapon.

Following the arrest, police detained five more suspects, including a woman, aged between 32 and 46, in Skudai.

Kumar said five of the suspects, all Malaysians, had criminal records, including for drug-related offences, while four tested positive for methamphetamine.

He said police also seized S$12,000 and RM41,400 in cash, a gold chain, a luxury watch, a car and a parang.

All the suspects have been remanded for 10 days until Aug 21.

The victim was also remanded for 14 days under the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not having valid travel documents, while his girlfriend was remanded for four days after testing positive for drugs. - FMT
