A member of the Masjid Taman Sri Saujana congregation, who declined to be named, said funeral preparations for Nur Anggun Dahlia Abdullah began as early as 10.30am, with the body bathed and shrouded at the mosque before funeral prayers were performed at 11.10am.
The infant was buried at 11.50am in a sombre atmosphere at the cemetery.
"About 20 people attended this morning's burial, comprising family members, including the baby's mother, as well as close neighbours who came to pay their last respects," the congregant said.
Earlier, media reported that housewife and step-grandmother Nurul Farhana Laili Shah, 39, was charged at the magistrate's court today with murdering the infant.
According to the charge, the accused allegedly murdered Nur Anggun Dahlia at a house in Taman Sri Saujana between 12.30pm on July 30 and 9.30am on July 31.
Yesterday, Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad was reported as saying that the woman had been caring for the infant since birth after the baby's 18-year-old mother, who is still studying at a vocational college in the state, left the child in her care.
He was reported as saying that investigations were initially conducted under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act for neglect causing death, after the woman lodged a police report claiming the baby had died in her sleep.
However, a post-mortem examination found that the cause of death was trauma to the abdomen and chest caused by a blunt object, with visible wounds and bruises on the body believed to have resulted from abuse.
Ab Rahaman was also reported as saying that initial investigations found the woman had stomped on and struck the infant with her hands and feet, leading to the case being reclassified under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. - NST
