PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar said her father must focus on structural wage reforms if he gets a second term as prime minister.
She pointed out that workers’ take-home pay stood at only 33 percent, which had inevitably fuelled public anger.
"Therefore, a second term will allow Anwar (Ibrahim) to continue structural reforms.
"Deeper policies specifically to build a fairer salary structure and ensure that wage rates increase in line with productivity (must be introduced) to ensure this (take-home salary) percentage increases," she said in her speech at the PKR national congress at the Melaka International Trade Centre this afternoon.
Nurul Izzah is among several PKR leaders championing a second term for Anwar, joining Youth and Sports Minister Dr Taufiq Johari, who previously praised the party president’s "brilliant" leadership.
In June, a Merdeka Centre survey found that Anwar ranked as the most popular politician, with a 59 percent satisfaction rating and a 40 percent dissatisfaction score - a marked contrast to his more modest 45 percent satisfaction and 51 percent dissatisfaction among Malay voters.
Yet, Malaysiakini's analysis of the recent Negeri Sembilan polls projected that Anwar could lose his Tambun parliamentary seat in Perak in the next general election.
Low Chinese turnout for Pakatan Harapan, coupled with a swing among Indian voters towards BN, signals trouble for the coalition, which could continue to bleed support from disenchanted voters over its perceived abandonment of reformist ideals.
Bittersweet note
Commenting on her impending "temporary leave" from the party, Izzah said that she will continue to push reforms in line with PKR's agenda.
"I will also continue to bear the duty through different spaces, but I will move in tandem with the same goal: to strengthen institutions, preserve dignity, and open up opportunities for many citizens to help build a more just Malaysia," she said.
She ended her speech on a bittersweet note, reminiscing on her time growing up within the party.
"I would like to end by first saying thank you again to all the uncles, aunties, friends who have been my companions, taught me, been with me when Anwar was forced away from us in every ceramah, who gave me hugs even though at that time the feeling of loneliness was very strong," she said.
Yesterday, Nurul Izzah said she "could not please everyone" while speaking on her decision to step down from the party's number two post.
Previously, PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said the party’s central leadership had rejected her resignation request, but granted her temporary leave instead.
She had won the deputy presidency last year in a straight fight against incumbent Rafizi Ramli - a victory that critics view as a catalyst for internal friction within PKR, as it preceded the former Pandan MP's resignation as economy minister.
He later left the party to lead Bersama along with another former PKR leader, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. - Mkini
