Perikatan Nasional election director Sanusi Nor wants Selangor to be the starting point of Pakatan Harapan’s collapse.“If Harapan falls in Selangor, it will fall at the federal (level),” he was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today at a Selangor PAS rally last night.
He added that voters should evaluate Harapan by its performance in government, not by slogans.
A Malaysiakini forecast supported by political scientists previously estimated that if BN and PN’s “Malay unity” momentum can be sustained, it can capture both Selangor and Putrajaya.
The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has cancelled a public lecture scheduled to feature political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda, following concerns raised over his selection as a speaker, Astro Awani reported.
The programme titled “Asia’s Heroes and Villains: A Study of Leadership”, organised by the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation, was initially scheduled for Aug 18.
The move came after the IIUM Academic Staff Association expressed concern over Razak's (above) legal link to the murder case of Mongolian Altantuya Shaaribuu.
IIUM It said this link should be considered for the lecture, especially given the session's own theme of leadership and accountability.
"Moving forward, in the future, we would like to suggest the establishment of a reasonable vetting protocol in selecting the speakers, which may prevent unnecessary backlash to the good name of our beloved university," it added.
Sungai Petani Bersatu division chief Nik Fazli Nik Fathil said that 23 division committee members and 21 branch chiefs had resigned with immediate effect.
In a statement, he stressed that the decision was not made hastily or for personal interests, nor was it due to pressure from any party. Instead, he said it was based on principles, a sense of responsibility and the struggle they had upheld.
Nik Fazli lamented growing disappointment and concern among the grassroots over the party’s direction, approach and management.
He said a party that wanted to remain relevant could not rely solely on nostalgia over past successes and needed to undertake self-reflection and change to regain public confidence.
Besides resigning as Bersatu Sungai Petani division chief, Nik Fazli also relinquished his positions as Kedah Bersatu treasurer and deputy election director.
The Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) stressed that repealing the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (UUCA) must not simply mean replacing it with a new law that retains the same old approach and spirit.
In a statement, its secretary-general Ahmad Farhan Rosli said the new framework should instead represent a shift from control to empowerment, with university autonomy, academic freedom, responsible governance and the student voice at its core.
He also called for the process to be open and inclusive, involving students, academics, university administrators, youth organisations, civil society and legal experts, and expressed MBM's readiness to be part of the reform process. - Mkini
