5 teen boys sent to Henry Gurney School for armed robbery

The Kuching sessions court in Sarawak has ordered five teenage boys to be sent to a Henry Gurney School after they pleaded guilty to armed robbery at a 24-hour convenience store.

Judge Noorhisham Jaafar issued the order after reviewing social and behavioural reports prepared by the social welfare department, Dayak Daily reported.

Two of the boys, both aged 18, were ordered to remain at the school until they turned 21. The other three, aged between 14 and 15, were ordered to be held there for five years.

The five had pleaded guilty on Aug 5 to charges under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang robbery, read with Section 397, which covers robbery involving the use of weapons.

According to the facts of the case, they, along with an accomplice still at large, attacked a 19-year-old shop attendant with machetes and wooden clubs at about 4am on June 1 at a convenience store along Jalan Tun Jugah.

The worker reported that the attackers threatened him and forced him to hand over RM1,000 in cash and cigarettes before fleeing.

The boys also damaged the store’s CCTV monitor and cash register.

Police arrested them on July 31.

Deputy public prosecutor Adriana Maisarah Farid led the prosecution, while the teenagers were unrepresented. - FMT
