Facebook user held for allegedly insulting Agong

The police have detained a Facebook user for allegedly having insulted the Agong on the social media website, according to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

The female suspect was detained to assist in investigations, the MCMC said in a statement.

Although the investigations are being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the suspect may also be charged under the Sedition Act 1948.
 
She was believed to have been in hiding after her identity was revealed in blogosphere, said the MCMC.

The commission has requested her friends to come forward to assist in its investigations.

MCMC said it views very seriously the abuse of social media to upload content or comments containing elements of insult especially against the monarchy.
