KUALA LUMPUR: Concerned and fed up with the haze, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin went to KL Sentral during the rush hour to hand out facial masks to commuters.
Going straight to the transportation hub after attending the swearing-in ceremony in Parliament, the Youth and Sports Minister led a group of volunteers from Umno and Barisan Nasional Youth Volunteers distributed about 40,000 masks.
Other teams of volunteers also did the same at other locations around Klang Valley and Seremban.
"Although we couldn't get the recommended N95 masks because of the shortage in the market, we gave out whatever face masks that we could get in the short time that can provide some protection from the effects of the haze," Khairy said.
"When I was with our volunteers in KL Sental, I noticed that there were a lot of people who did not have a facial mask to protect themselves," he added.
He said the Umno Youth secretary would negotiate with facial mask manufacturers so that they could distribute more masks.
Secretary Datuk Megat Firdouz Megat Junid also led a team to handover a memorandum of protest to the Indonesian Embassy over the haze.
"I think it is very unfair for the Indonesians to blame others," said Khairy.
For example, he said that putting the blame on Malaysian companies was firstly done without proof and that it has even been denied by those companies.
"Even if Malaysian companies were really involved, do something about it and don't just talk tough.
"If those companies violated Indonesian law, take action against them and the people of Malaysia would not be sympathetic towards them if they are found guilty," he said. - Star
