The controversial novel 'Interlok' is making a comeback but this time as a television drama serial.
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Indian Rights Action Team (NIAT) today claimed that the controversial novel, Interlok, is being made into a television drama serial funded by Umno.
The non-governmental organization’s chief Thasleem Mohd Ibrahim claimed that RTM has been entrusted to produce the serial and plans are underway to start the shooting in the near future.
“Umno is planning for another May 13 by screening Tanda Putera and funding the production of the Interlok drama. They want to teach the Chinese and Malays a lesson for not supporting Barisan Nasional in the 13th general election,” he told a press conference here.
Tanda Putera is a movie based on the May 13, 1969 racial clashes in the country. It has received a lot of criticism with claims that the movie failed to paint a true picture of the incident.
Interlok on the other hand was introduced as a novel for SPM students last year.
The novel was pulled back after the Indian community objected to the reading material as it contained elements which degraded the Indian community as a whole.
“We want the BN government to stop the screening of Tanda Putera and scrap the shooting of Interlok as a movie. If RTM insists on shooting the drama, NIAT will mobilise members to disrupt the making of the drama.
“We know the shooting of the drama will begin next month…so we know what to do,” said Thasleem.
