INTRUSION CLIMBING EXPEDITION KICKS OFF

LABUAN: A patriotism climbing expedition of Mount Kinabalu, the first ever organised, is being initiated to spread the spirit of patriotism among Malaysian youths.

The 8-member expedition that will be led by a woman is organised to register the people’s appreciation to the security forces for safeguarding the country during the Lahad Datu bloody intrusion, from June 12-13.
All the members, aged between 20 and 30 are from Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur and had undergone an extensive training programme for the past two months.

Speaking to Bernama yesterday, the expedition’s spokesman Arif Khalid said it was an obligation for being a civil society to contribute towards achieving the national agenda of creating a caring society in the country.

“We are proud to be able to realise this mission and hope we can reach the summit safely and alert youths in the country that we have a social obligation to fulfill,” he said.

Arif said the intrusion which had never been expected, fired up the spirit of patriotism among Malaysians.

A group of men claiming to have links with the Sulu Sultanate from southern Philippines landed on the shores of Lahad Datu on Feb 12, with the objective of asserting their claim on unresolved territorial claim in eastern Sabah.

The intrusion, led by Jamalul Kiram III, one of the claimants to the throne of the Sultanate of Sulu, claimed the lives of nine policemen and many more intruders.

“What had inspired us to launch this mission is that not only Sabahans, but the people in the Peninsular have also shown and expressed their feelings and sympathy to the security forces who sacrificed their lives to safeguard the sovereignty of the country. We have been following the development of the incursion from the start,” he said.

Arif said the expedition would be a valuable experience for the group as all of them are inexperienced climbers and reaching Asia’s highest summit of Kinabalu would be a useful experience to all of them. (Bernama)

  9. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today that the results of Election 2013 demonstrate “Chinese racism”, which he alleged was fanned by the DAP to ensure the community’s domination of Malaysian politics.

  10. The influential former prime minister’s accusation against the DAP reflects the strident tone of the right-wing elements in Umno, as several politicians from the ruling party and the party’s mouthpiece Utusan Malaysia continue to frame the May 5 polls as a Chinese-vs-Malay vote.

  11. “The DAP playing on racial sentiments drew the Chinese away from BN (Barisan Nasional) by depicting the MCA as lackeys of Umno,” Dr Mahathir wrote on his blog chedet.cc today.

  12. Dr Mahathir also claimed that the majority of protesters at Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) recent rallies against electoral fraud are Chinese youths.

  13. Probe into Sulu intrusion completed

KOTA KINABALU: Manila has completed investigations into the Feb 12 Sulu intrusion into Sabah and is expected to make a decision on whether self-proclaimed Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III will be charged with it.

Philippine media reports have stated that senior Philippine political personalities, including former Moro National Liberation Front chairman Nur Misuari, have been cleared of any involvement by the Philippines National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

The reports also said the NBI had submitted the investigation report to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and recommended the filing of criminal charges against Jamalul Kiram and his 38 armed followers, who were arrested by the Philippine authorities on March 13 upon their return from Sabah.

The NBI also recommended those involved to be charged with illegal possession of firearms, violation of election gun ban and for inciting war against a foreign country.

  14. However, details of the report were not made available to the media with Philippine Justice Secretary Leila de Lima saying the NBI findings would serve as a basis for filing of charges against the conspirators. According to the Philippine Star, the NBI investigations indicated that the Kiram family and their supporters had made plans for the “invasion” as early as November 2012. The newspaper reports said the NBI explained the need for the Kirams and their supporters to be indicted for inciting a war with Malaysia, which had triggered clashes between the Sulu gunmen and Malaysian authorities. The NBI investigations, besides Misuari, had also found that former national security adviser Norberto Gonzales and Council for Philippine Affairs secretary-general Pastor Saycon had “no role or involvement” in the Sulu incursion as alleged earlier.

  15. Kiram's younger brother Azzimudie Kiram started arriving in Kampung Tanduo in Sabah's east coast Lahad Datu district from Feb 9 that led to a stand-off between the armed group and Malaysian security forces.

A total of 73 intruders were killed with 59 bodies recovered in the two month-long encounter with Malaysian security forces. Malaysian police arrested 184 people and charged 31 for various criminal offences, including waging war against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
