MIC should not hastily reject positions in the Perak state executive council, since the party is not “economically sound” like the MCA, said MIC strategy bureau director Vell Paari.
“MIC is not MCA, as MCA can afford to take such a stand because the Chinese community is economically sound and have various NGOs that are financially well-structured to help the community.
“To be frank, the speaker's position only benefits the person appointed as the speaker, and not the community,” he noted in a statement today.
Vell Paari, who is the son of former MIC chief S Samy Vellu, said this in refuting MIC chief G Palanivel’s (right) boycott call over the Perak speaker position. MIC leaders, he stressed, must not feel deprived because of their “ego”.
Vell Paari added, “My feeling is very simple - if we want to make a stand, then it must be for the cause of the community and not to be seen as flexing the ego.
“So, let's not punish or deprive our MIC leaders, members and community in Perak for the sake of the position of (state assembly) speaker.”
In contrast to the speaker's position, he said, the Perak state government's offer of a position of “special adviser”, similar to the status of an exco members and a “special officer” position to MIC are more beneficial to the Indian community.
Last Saturday, Palanivel made an issue of the speaker post being denied to the MIC, which the party chief said rightfully belonged to the MIC.

Umno also hits out at Palanivel
He warned that if the situation was not remedied, “MIC will remain BN-friendly in Perak, but will not take any positions - including councillors - as a sign of protest”.
Vell Paari said any major decision, such as the call made by Palanivel, should only be decided at an extraordinary general meeting of the MIC.
Meanwhile, Perak BN Backbenchers Club chairperson Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib has also launched a broadside against Palanivel for making the threat if MIC was not given the speaker's post.
"Palanivel's statement on the matter is an apparent threat against (Perak Menteri Besar) Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
"He has made himself unfit to lead the party (MIC)," Khusairi, who is also Umno's Slim state assemblyperson, was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times.
