KUALA LUMPUR - Women seem to be progressing faster than men these days, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said, even labelling members of his own sex “lazy” and claiming that more are ending up as “mat rempits”.
The country’s longest-serving former prime minister also said men are getting “less and less educated” than women, pointing to the smaller number of men in universities.
"Women will soon be the breadwinners in their families, while the men will be confined to the kitchen," Dr Mahathir told the Women Extraordinaire Forum 2014 (WEF 2014) during his keynote address.
To the delight of the forum participants, the sharp-witted leader then said that living skills should be made a compulsory lesson to male school students, in order to help them become better house-husbands.
Dr Mahathir also said that because there are fewer successful men these days, many accomplished women are forced to settle for less-qualified partners.
This lack of equality between the genders, he said, is also one reason why some are lobbying for same-sex marriages.
“It will be a sad day when women start looking like men and men start looking like women.
“I regret the day where there will be no distinction between men and women,” he told the forum, adding that a marriage should be between “a real man and woman”.
Dr Mahathir also spoke on how the life of a career-oriented woman disables them to care for their children.
“Women with an active public life are unable to spend quality time with their families.
“The government must consider having proper moral classes in schools to help instil proper values in children, since their parents are away making money,” he added. -Malay Mail
