GEORGE TOWN - Penang has urged those who wanted to close down Chinese schools to pick a page from Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem who reportedly described such calls as "stupid talk."
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said this showed that there was opposition against such closures even among the governing Barisan Nasional members.
He said the calls to close down Chinese schools went against the Federal Constitution which guaranteed the right to use one's mother tongue.
"Do not because of politics politicise education," he urged in a press conference today.
Adenan was reported to have made the remark on Oct 22 after presenting a RM3million cheque to the Sarawak United Association of Private Chinese Secondary School Management Board. The monies are to be distributed to the 14 Chinese schools in the state.
Adenan had pointed out that Chinese schools enrollment also included children from other ethnicities in Sarawak.
Earlier, Lim announced that the third Penang International Science Fair will be held on Nov 15 and 16, and 58 high technology companies will participate. -Sundaily
