ULAANBAATAR (Mongolia): The government is considering a proposal to enhance security at major airports in the country by only allowing passengers into the airport terminal complex, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.
Zahid said the proposal, discussed at the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, would see only passengers with valid tickets being allowed into the airport terminals for airline check-in, Bernama reported.
In this way, he added, all other persons, including family members and friends sending off the passengers, will have to remain outside the building.
This would also ensure that any other people, who have no business at the airport, will be prevented from entering the airport.
“The Cabinet had instructed the Transport Minister (Liow Tiong Lai) to work out this proposal with MAHB (Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad). Hopefully, it can be implemented soon,” he told reporters covering the 11th Asia-Europe Meeting (Asem) Summit here.
One country practising a similar security screening process, whereby only passengers with a valid ticket in hand are allowed into the main airport complex, is India.
Zahid said that Liow was also asked to find a mechanism to ensure that vehicles sending off or waiting for the passengers would not be near the terminal.
“Perhaps these vehicles should only be allowed to be placed at the car park,” he was quoted as saying by the news agency.
On the current action taken, Zahid said he has instruced for an increase in the number of police and military personnel stationed at all airports.
“Assets to enhance security control at the airports would also be increased, including purchasing sophisticated devices like high-definition CCTVs and facial recognition equipment,” he said, according to Bernama.
