Offenders often give the excuse that they do not have the money although they can get a motorcycle licence for RM299 under the MyLesen programme.
PETALING JAYA: Road users with expired road licences or without licences at all are increasingly becoming a problem, says Selangor Road Transport Department (JPJ) Director Nazli Md Taib.
The number of offenders caught without valid licences so far this year is almost double that for the same period last year, Nazli told reporters tonight at the conclusion of the Selangor Ops Hari Raya.
The festive season road safety operation was conducted from June 29 till today.
A total of 691 road users have been caught in Selangor for not having valid licences so far this year.
In tonight’s operation, 64 road users were found to have no licences. Another 25 were driving cars or riding their motorcycles with expired ones.
“Most of them gave the excuse that they didn’t have the money to get licences or that they were expensive. That’s not acceptable,” Nazli said.
He said that the MyLesen programme, initiated by JPJ, is to help unlicensed motorcyclists get one at a cheaper price.
“The price is fair and there is no excuse.”
Under this programme, a person only has to pay RM299 for a B2 class licence to ride a motorcycle under 250cc, instead of the usual RM350.
The operation this year also involved random urine tests. Eleven motorists tested positive for marijuana and syabu usage.
