Azmin: At one point, Amirudin was not loyal to Anwar

The present Selangor PKR chief Amirudin Shari was at one point not loyal to party president Anwar Ibrahim.

This was according to Amirudin’s predecessor and now rival Azmin Ali.

Speaking at the Keluar Sekejap talk show that was published yesterday, Azmin said this when asked whether he hoped Amirudin would lead a change of government in Selangor after the Sheraton Move in 2020.

“He was involved... He was in our discussions, way back before Sheraton Move...

“He was clearly not loyal to Anwar, because he knew who appointed him as menteri besar,” said Azmin.

At this point, he was cut off before he could answer the rest of the question and instead transitioned into an answer about how Amirudin rose to power as Selangor menteri besar.

“I proposed to His Majesty to consider Amirudin as menteri besar (in 2018),” Azmin said.

“Alhamdulilah, His Majesty consented. I was happy because he was a young leader with a fresh vision and ambition.

“I told (Amirudin) that as a menteri besar, you need a political base, or people will disturb you. Hence, I gave him the position of Gombak PKR division chief and the chair of Selangor PKR.

“I gave him three key positions on a silver platter, simultaneously, in order for him to be in a good and stable position to administer Selangor,” said Azmin.

Amirudin was made menteri besar at the age of 38 after Azmin stepped down from the position to take up a position in Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s cabinet in 2018.

Prior to his departure from PKR in 2020, Azmin led a faction, dubbed “the cartel” by their rivals, that held many important positions within the party and government.

Amirudin finally lost the cartel label during the 2022 parliamentary elections, which saw him unseating Azmin as the three-term MP for Gombak.

Zahid’s cases

Meanwhile, Azmin claimed he was there when Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi met then prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and made several demands in return for support.

Azmin said he stated this in his affidavit that was submitted in the suit brought by Zahid against Muhyiddin. This suit will be heard in October.

“The fundamental issue is, Muhyiddin did not want to intervene in any ongoing criminal cases... even when he was the prime minister with a small margin.

“That is the difference between Anwar Ibrahim and Muhyiddin. (Muhyiddin) did not allow those with court problems in his cabinet,” said Azmin.

Zahid is currently Anwar’s deputy prime minister I.

Azmin said that in Singapore recently, cabinet minister S Iswaran was not allowed to perform his duties while he was being investigated by the authorities.

“In Malaysia, we are different. The courts established a prima facie case (against Zahid), yet he is the deputy prime minister.

“This is causing a widening trust deficit in the country,” said Azmin. - Mkini
