China foreign minister to meet 'busy' Anwar in Kedah or Penang

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has agreed to meet Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is preoccupied with the campaign for the state elections, in Kedah or Penang this Friday.

The discussion is expected to focus on China’s investment in Malaysia.

“This Chinese foreign minister (is) from one of the most powerful countries in the world.

“He agreed when I apologised (to him) that I am busy (with elections). He said it’s okay, he can come to Kedah or Penang,” Bernama quoted Anwar telling reporters in Nibong Tebal, Penang, this afternoon.

Anwar visited Beijing and Hainan from March 29 to April 1, where he held summit meetings with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

He also attended the China-led Boao Forum for Asia, securing major investments and partnerships from China on Malaysia’s key industrial projects.

After returning from his trip, Anwar said Xi also welcomed his idea of setting up an Asian Monetary Fund to reduce the region’s reliance on the US dollar and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

‘Defend, not run’ - Anwar on Muhyiddin’s son-in-law

On a separate matter, Anwar said Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin’s son-in-law should defend himself instead of fleeing from the authorities.

“If he thinks he is innocent, stay put instead of running away; not a good example,” he said.

The prime minister was commenting on the alleged involvement of Muhyiddin’s son-in-law in relation to an MACC investigation over alleged misappropriation linked to the migrant worker registration project.

Yesterday, the MACC issued a statement seeking Muhyiddin’s son-in-law Adlan Berhan and lawyer Mansoor Saat to facilitate investigations into a government project involving the registration, recruitment, and storage of migrant workers’ biometric data.

MACC said a check on records found the two left Malaysia on May 17 and 21 respectively and there is no record of either of them returning.

Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairperson, criticised the opposition for often talking about being clean but several of them are involved in allegations of corruption.

“So, you (the opposition) have to take care of this. The amount linked to corruption is large; now PN, PAS, and Bersatu cannot say they are clean because they are too involved in huge corruption,” he added. - Mkini
